Detection of shallowly buried objects using impulse radar
نویسنده
چکیده
The impulse radar has shown promising results for detecting buried objects, even non-metallic ones. One problem with ground penetrating radars is the strong backscattered signal from the ground surface. If the object is buried deeply below the surface this is no problem since the backscattered signal from the surface will arrive earlier than the target signal and we only have to gate the time signal. When the objects are shallowly buried gating is not possible since the backscattered signal from target and the surface will arrive almost simultaneously. The detection problem is thus to a large extent the problem of separating the target signal from the ground backscatter. In the present paper we introduce a signal model that exploits the diierent properties of the backscattered signals from target and ground surface. Diier-ent algorithms for separation of the diierent components in the signal model are presented together with a performance measure to evaluate the algorithms. After the signal components have been separated, both classical detection methods and some more ad hoc methods are applied and evaluated.

Extraction of Discriminant Features from Impulse Radar Data for Classi cation of Buried Objects
| This paper deals with the problem of detecting and classifying buried objects. The application in mind when addressing this problem is the detection of buried landmines. Modern landmines are to a large extent made out of plastic and ceramic materials. This makes detection with traditional sensors such as metal detectors and magnetometers almost impossible. Another problem with these sensors i...
متن کاملClutter Reduction and Object Detection in Surface Penetrating Radar
This paper addresses the problem of detecting buried objects using a surface penetrating impulse radar. A big problem is that reeections from the ground surface will obscure the often much weaker target signal. The ground reeections and the target signal are mod-eled using a very simple model. This model is used to derive a detector based on a Likelihood Ratio Test, where unknown model paramete...
متن کامل3D Modelling of Under Ground Burried Objects Based on Ground Penetration Radar
There is a growing demand for mapping and 3D modelling of buried objects such as pipelines, agricultural hetitage, landmines and other buried objects. Usually, large scale and high resolution maps from these objects are needed. Manually map generation and modeling of these objects are cost and time consuming and is dependent on lots of resources. Therefore, automating the subsurface mapping and...
متن کاملChemical-specific imaging of shallowly buried objects using femtosecond laser pulses.
We demonstrate that objects buried in sand (1 to 4 mm deep) may be selectively imaged according to their chemical composition through spectral analysis of the laser-induced breakdown signal. The signal is generated by loosely focused femtosecond laser pulses having energies ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mJ. We determine the depth from which a spectral signal may be measured as a function of pulse ene...
متن کاملDetection of Shallowly Buried Landmines from Ground Penetrating Radar Signals
A method for detecting shallowly buried landmines using sequential GPR data is presented. After removing dominant coherent component of ground surface reflection from GPR data, three kinds of target features related to wave correlation, energy ratio, and signal arrival times are extracted. Since the detection problem treated here is reduced to a binary hypothesis test, an approach based on a li...
